Liverpool did a lot right during the summer, in a transfer window that was made difficult by the amount that the Reds' recruitment team had left themselves to do. So many players needed replacing at once that it was a much harder task than it might have been had that process of evolution been more spread out.
Fortunately, the players that arrived —Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endō and Ryan Gravenberch — have all played their part in the season to date. It is clear how at least three of those players fit into the long-term plan at Anfield and Liverpool picked up some real quality for Jürgen Klopp to play with.
But there is more work to be done. Liverpool's defense needs to be looked at carefully and planning needs to take place in other areas of the field as well. With a potential Premier League title race to be embarked upon this season, there is an argument for doing at least one deal mid-season to give the team a timely boost too.
Here is the Liverpool.com verdict on the transfer gossip to emerge around the Reds today. We start with a young defender who appears to make a lot of sense for Liverpool to look at, before a midfielder who seems a much less likely target is linked too.
Lucas Beraldo (São Paulo)
Liverpool has been linked with a move for São Paulo defender Lucas Beraldo for a while now, but the Daily Star (print edition, via Paisley Gates) reports that Newcastle, West Ham United and Brentford are all also taking a look at the 20-year-old ahead of January.
Valued at around $25m (£20m/€23m), Beraldo has already played more than 50 times at senior level in Brazil and he is one of the most highly-rated starlets to be emerging from South America. With Joël Matip out of contract at the end of the season, the Reds might need another center-back sooner rather than later.
Liverpool's home shirt for the 2023/2024 campaign pays homage to Bill Shankly and the legendary Reds manager's final season in charge at Anfield. The Nike shirt features a bright red design with a bold white contrast on the colour and cuffs.
Prices start from £59.95Nike
Liverpool.com says: Without having seen Beraldo play, it is hard to say whether or not he is the right player for the Reds to bring in. But a new defender seems like the next priority for Liverpool to look at in the transfer market.
With Matip's deal coming to an end and Virgil van Dijk into his 30s, Liverpool needs to plan for the future. Ibrahima Konaté and Joe Gomez do not have the best injury records and as well as Jarell Quansah has done, he is still very young and inexperienced.
Hakan Çalhanoğlu (Inter Milan)
West Ham, Chelsea and Liverpool are all 'likely' to make a move for 29-year-old midfielder Hakan Çalhanoğlu, according to Inter Live. The Turkish attacking midfielder is a talented player but the Reds are not set to be in the market for someone of that age profile any time soon.
Other Premier League clubs are also said to be taking a look at the playmaker, including Newcastle, but the report claims that Liverpool is among the most interested. A valuation of around $54m (£43m/€50m) is suggested.
Liverpool.com says: There is no way that Liverpool would pay $54m for a player who turns 30 in February. While the Reds could maybe do with further midfield additions, it would make more sense if those were more defensive-minded players.
