Liverpool might well be glad to get back down to business tomorrow after what has been an extraordinary few days.

The build-up to the Europa League group stage clash against Union Saint-Gilloise has been dominated by the fallout from the VAR controversy surrounding the Reds’ defeat at Tottenham.

The PGMOL has since released the audio from the VAR and referees on duty that day, demonstrating how a breakdown in communications led to Luis Díaz’s goal being wrongly disallowed. Jürgen Klopp has now suggested the game should be replayed, although conceded it is unlikely.

While it has been an unprecedented few days for Liverpool, it can still count itself lucky to be in a better position than its great rival.

Manchester United’s poor start to the season continued on Tuesday with another defeat leaving it in danger of going out of the Champions League at the first hurdle, and things don’t look to be improving on or off the pitch at the moment for the Red Devils.

Here, Liverpool.com takes a scan around the other big sides in the Premier League and around Europe to take a look at the news going on at the other clubs.

Bruno Fernandes shows frustration at André Onana

Bruno Fernandes has never been shy of showing his frustrations with his teammates, and André Onana bore the brunt of the Manchester United captain’s ire during another calamitous defeat.

United were beaten once again at home on Tuesday, this time against Galatasaray in the Champions League, with Onana again not covering himself in glory with an error-strewn performance.

Once such incident was spotted by the MEN, and saw the goalkeeper play a loose pass which allowed the Turkish side to turn the ball over and go on the attack, with Fernandes making no effort to hide his emotions.

Liverpool.com says: It’s all going wrong at Old Trafford (again). So far, Onana has not proven to be a good signing at all — how he’s managed to get nominated for the Yashin Trophy ahead of Alisson this year is anyone’s guess.

While the problems off the pitch are well documented, Erik ten Hag undoubtedly has to shoulder some of the blame for performances on it. His summer signings have not worked out yet, and with the frequency with which his side is losing games, you have to wonder how much longer he’ll get before the Glazers’ trigger finger gets itchy.

Manchester United shortlist Liverpool 'target'

Manchester United is looking at a defender linked with Liverpool as a possible solution to its problems at the back, according to the Daily Mail.

Lisandro Martinez looks as though he could be out for the rest of 2023 through injury, while Harry Maguire’s future remains a talking point after a summer move failed to materialize.

United therefore has some options in mind, including Benfica’s António Silva, who was linked with a move to Liverpool during the summer (via Football Transfers). Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite and Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo have also been touted as options.

Liverpool.com says: You’d like to think if it was a straight choice between Liverpool and United in January, then a player would choose the move to Anfield, especially if the latter is out of the Champions League by then (which looks a distinct possibility now).

At 19, Silva would be one for the future, and it would be a great opportunity for the Reds to beat their great rival to yet another transfer. As it happens, Branthwaite has also been linked with Liverpool previously, although it’s unlikely Everton would sell to its Merseyside rivals.
