Liverpool, with 14 matches played in the Premier League and some really tough away trips including Manchester City already gone, is a point ahead of Pep Guardiola's side. Games with Sheffield United and Crystal Palace are next and that advantage needs to be maintained at the very minimum.
With Manchester City traveling to Aston Villa midweek with some key injuries and suspensions, there is a possibility that Guardiola's men could slip up. Regardless, Liverpool needs to make it three wins from three inside seven days.
It was always going to be important to step off on the right foot ahead of this package of three matches. Liverpool will need to give itself less work to do in the future, but got the required job done thanks to a selection of exceptional goals. You can expect at least a couple to feature in December's Goal of the Month competition.

But what else did we spot beyond the spectacular at Anfield? Here's what Liverpool.com learned and what you might have missed as the Reds beat Marco Silva's Fulham 4-3 in a thrilling Premier League classic.
One thing we learned
It is easy to take Alisson Becker for granted when he is so good and so consistent every single week. Caoimhín Kelleher is as good an understudy as you can reasonably expect to have available but the gap between the pair was clear here.
With the Brazilian in goal, Liverpool would probably have won the game comfortably and never allowed Fulham back into the contest. As it was, some poor shot-stopping and nervy distribution did not help.
Biggest takeaway
The Reds are far from perfected yet. That much, as Liverpool 2.0 continues to evolve, is absolutely clear. Defensively, Jürgen Klopp's side was not good at all here in some moments and Kelleher will not want to see the first two Fulham goals back.
But there is also character and match-winning quality in this Liverpool squad. Even in as unlikely a source as Wataru Endō, it was able to conjure a turnaround that didn't really feel like it was coming.

While Manchester City is imperfect too, perhaps a 95-point-plus campaign is not going to be needed to become the league champion. That might need to be the case for Liverpool to really challenge at the summit but so far, it cannot be ruled out.
If that is the reality that unfolds, then maybe it will come at the right time for the Reds, with his group of players still individually and collectively some way off their peak. Getting as close as possible to the summit, though, will be a crucial learning curve.
A moment you might have missed
When Liverpool vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold stepped up with the winning goal, almost every Reds player ran and slid into the corner of the pitch between The Kop and the Sir Kenny Dalglish Stand. Darwin Núñez was a notable exception.
The Uruguayan instead ran in the opposite direction, heading straight for a Klopp hug. The German embraced Núñez and the by-then-substituted Dominik Szoboszlai as Anfield went wild around them.
This is not the first time that Núñez has been involved in a late Liverpool win — not even the first time this season, in fact — but he certainly enjoyed it. There was probably a bit of relief in there as well given it was not a game for the 24-year-old to remember in terms of his own performance.
