The conversations around Trent Alexander-Arnold and his future role in midfield have been a permanent theme of his career ever since he broke onto the scene at Liverpool. Having been moved into a full-back role after coming through the academy's ranks as a midfielder, it's no surprise this has been a topic that has always followed him.

The Liverpool academy graduate is blessed with the kind of technical ability and ball-playing skills as well as creativity that would make him a suitable candidate for a midfield role. Recently, Liverpool fans have seen it first hand with Jürgen Klopp inverting him into playing in a more central position when the Reds are in possession.

Even more advanced has been Gareth Southgate, who has exclusively used Alexander-Arnold in midfield while on international duty for England recently. In his most recent outing, Alexander-Arnold showed just what he is capable of against Malta, putting in a Man of the Match performance for the Three Lions.

Given the developments around Alexander-Arnold's role over the last six months, it would not be a surprise to see him finally make the move permanently to midfield in the coming seasons. At 25 years old, he is now at the peak of his career and clearly ready to make a change.

It should be taken with a pinch of salt, but the latest transfer rumors surrounding Liverpool could also hint towards Alexander-Arnold making that change into midfield. According to Spanish outlet Depor, Liverpool is interested in Bayer Leverkusen right-back Jeremie Frimpong.

The Dutch international, who is teammates with the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo, has been one of the stars of Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen side, who are currently two points above Bayern Munich in first place in the Bundesliga.

Frimpong impressively made 20 goal contributions for Leverkusen last season, and he is already on 12 in 16 games in all competitions for Alonso's side this time around. A very explosive player with great one-on-one skills and the ability to bomb forward, Frimpong could be an excellent choice for Liverpool on the right flank.

Under Alonso, he has played as more of a wing-back in a more advanced role, but in the past, he has been tasked with playing as a full-back and did his diligent duties defensively as well. Bringing him in could provide Liverpool with a long-term solution to the right-back department and a reason to move Alexander-Arnold further up the pitch.

For years now, the argument for keeping Alexander-Arnold at right-back has been that there are few players who could do as good a job in that position as the Liverpool man. But Frimpong may just be one of those few players, and it's why Liverpool would be smart to make a move for one of Alonso's favorite Leverkusen stars.
