Fluendo DVD Player for Solaris and Linux a little bit closer

Fluendo recently updated progress on their commercial DVD player application for Linux and Solaris systems saying “Currently our DVD player software is being reviewed by Dolby. We can’t ship it until Dolby puts a “certified” stamp on it. This is quite long and complex because of how unreliable audio drivers support is with Linux. We expect Dolby to give us the green light pretty soon”

why would you use this when plenty of free software works and works well after years of ironing out the issues? xine? vlc? mplayer? others…

      Hi Elchu,

As you may be aware the DVD technologies are heavily patent encumbered. This means that although you as a “home user” may be able to get by without a licensed DVD player larger organisations can not without opening themselves up to litigation and in some countries even criminal prosecution.

If your current playback software works for you then keep on using it, Fluendo’s DVD Player will enable larger organisations to provide DVD playback without risking a long stint in the courts.

Well, there are also some other important differences, mainly in features: while with non licensed DVD players you often don’t get to see the menus, change angles, etc. with Fluendo DVD player you can do it no problem.
